Recommended Gear for Club Trips

Recommended Gear for All Club Trips:

  • A well maintained sea kayak with secondary buoyancy (inflatable or fixed).
  • NZ Standards approved, or similar quality, lifejacket with whistle attached by lanyard.
  • Paddle and spray skirt.
  • Fitted deck lines.
  • Sponge, bailer or alternate pumping system.
  • Appropriate clothing for likely conditions of wet, cold and/or sun protection.  Note: cotton clothing gets very cold when wet, therefore it is recommended that you wear thermal clothing (eg polypropylene, wool, etc) while on the water.
  • Sunscreen, hat, and sunglasses.
  • Food and drinking water appropriate to the trip.  (All trips are BYO food, drink)
  • Footwear suitable for walking on rocks.
  • Dry containers.
  • First aid kit (group).
  • Spare paddle (group).
  • Tow rope (group).
  • Trip details left with responsible party.
  • Contact details of local Rescue Authorities and Marine Forecasts.
  • Mobile phone or VHF radio (group).
  • FM radio (group) – for weather forecasts.
  • Pre-trip weather checks.


Recommended Gear for Intermediate and Advanced Trips: 

  • Hands-free bailing system (electric or foot pump).
  • Individual spare paddles.
  • Personal first aid kit.
  • Thermal blanket and/or large plastic bag, eg garbage bag.
  • Kayak repair kit - at least a roll of duct tape.
  • Flares and/or other signalling devices.
  • Compass and maps.


Recommended at all levels when appropriate: 

  • Additional topographical maps for that unexpected walk out.
  • Instantly accessible knife.
  • Relevant personal items e.g. medication.
  • Additional clothing, footwear, food, water and a day pack in a dry storage container.
  • Emergency shelter and survival equipment.
  • Cooker, pot.
  • Matches or lighter.
  • Helmet for surf landings.
