Queens Birthday Paddle

Plans for a camping trip on Queens Birthday weekend were changed to a day trip after the frosty night in the middle of the previous week. Saturday looked to be the pick of the days and nine paddlers set off from St Heliers Bay Beach in perfect weather at 9.30 am and plans to meet a further 2 paddlers coming across from Beachlands. The group leaving the beach included Rona, Lester, Des, Will, Chantal, Chris, Colin, Philip and Sue.                   P1000585

A leisurely paddle around Achilles Point, through Karaka Bay and then across the Tamaki River took us to meet up with Kevin and Karen at Music Point, close to our first stop at one of Colin's 'cuppa tea' beaches. We indulged in an early cup and then set off across to Crater Bay on Browns Island.

Boats were soon onshore on the beach on Browns Island and while a few decided that relaxing on the beach was a good option, the more energetic amongst us took the short walk up to the trig beacon at the top of Browns, where we enjoyed the usual panoramic view of the gulf, including the iconic Rangitoto Island not far off.

Back on the beach, the idyllic day ensured a great spot to enjoy an early lunch before setting off back to St Heliers Bay and an afternoon of other activities.
